About NorthernSky Space

NorthernSky Space is exploring the intersection of software, simulation and space technology, with a focus on building practical technologies for the emerging New Space ecosystem.

Who We Are

NorthernSky Space is part of NorthernSky, a broader technology ecosystem exploring opportunities across software, cloud technologies, digital products, automation and emerging technologies. The space direction extends that same approach into one of the most technically demanding and fastest-changing areas in technology today.

Rather than attempting to replicate a traditional aerospace company, NorthernSky Space focuses on where software already has real, structural work to do: turning satellite and mission concepts into something that can be modeled, visualized and understood — through simulation, orbital analysis and space data tooling — well before, or instead of, building physical infrastructure.

Why Space?

Space is becoming a software problem as much as an engineering one. Smaller, cheaper satellites, software-defined spacecraft, and a rapidly growing supply of space-derived data have opened up a layer of the industry that has very little to do with launch vehicles or manufacturing — planning, simulation, analysis and operations software that a much wider range of organizations now need.

That shift is what NorthernSky Space is exploring. As the New Space ecosystem grows — more operators, more missions, more data, more automation — the tools available to plan and understand all of it need to grow with it. We’re building in that layer: software that makes complex space systems easier to model, simulate and reason about.

What We Are Building

NorthernSky Space’s current development is concentrated on a small number of connected areas — each one a piece of the software layer between a space concept and a real mission. See how these areas fit together on our technology page.

Space Simulation

A software environment for modeling satellite behavior, orbital scenarios and mission concepts, so they can be explored before — or instead of — touching real spacecraft. This is where most of our current development sits.

Mission Planning

Concepts and tooling for laying out a mission's phases and timelines, so scheduling conflicts and operational questions get worked through on the ground, not discovered live.

Space Operations

Software concepts for the day-to-day work of running a mission — commanding, scheduling, monitoring — explored today through simulation rather than live operational systems.

Orbital Analysis

Turning orbital mechanics into something visual and legible — ground tracks, pass windows, satellite positions over time — instead of a table of raw orbital elements.

Space Data

Early exploration of how simulated mission and satellite data can be treated as structured information that other tools can build on, not just a one-off visualization.

From Concepts to Simulation

One of our earliest and most concrete technology directions is space mission and satellite simulation. The NorthernSky Space Simulator gives a concept — an orbit, a satellite, a mission timeline — an environment to exist in as software, before it exists anywhere else. That’s deliberate: simulation lets an idea be examined, tested and refined at essentially no cost, long before it would ever need to touch real hardware.

It’s also, honestly, the easiest way to show what we mean by all of this rather than just describe it.

Part of the NorthernSky Ecosystem

NorthernSky Space is part of NorthernSky, a growing technology ecosystem exploring opportunities across software, cloud technologies, digital products, automation and other emerging technologies. Each part of the ecosystem approaches technology from a different direction, but shares the same underlying principle: build practical technology that solves real problems and opens up new possibilities.

Our Approach

Build

Turn ideas into practical software and technology, not just concepts on a slide.

Simulate

Explore complex systems digitally — orbits, missions, operations — before attempting anything in the real world.

Learn

Use experimentation and research to understand a fast-changing technology and industry.

Scale

Design software that can evolve as the New Space ecosystem, and our own understanding of it, changes.

Acknowledgements

We would like to express our appreciation to CelesTrak for making valuable orbital data resources available to the global space community. Its work supports satellite tracking, orbital analysis, research, and educational initiatives.

NorthernSky Space uses CelesTrak orbital data to support selected satellite-tracking and visualisation features. We appreciate the contribution that accessible orbital data makes to learning, exploration, and the development of space-related technologies.

Looking Further

Today’s work begins with software and simulation — that’s where the honest, immediate value is, and where NorthernSky Space is actually spending its time. Over the longer term, we’re interested in how these foundations could extend further: toward satellite systems, mission operations, space data platforms, communications and automation that support real missions rather than only simulated ones.

None of that is a roadmap with dates attached to it — it’s a direction we’re building toward, one honest step at a time. Building technology for today, while exploring what’s possible tomorrow.
